Understand Your Anger Like a Therapist

Anger has a reputation problem. We talk about "anger issues" as though anger itself had escaped containment and begun flipping tables unsupervised.

But anger usually carries information, and the information is often accurate. Something feels unjust. A boundary was crossed. An expectation was violated. You feel powerless in a situation where powerlessness is unbearable. You were hurt, and hurt arrived wearing something louder.

Ask:

- What happened immediately before the anger?

- What boundary feels crossed?

- What expectation was violated?

- What hurt is this anger protecting?

- What would anger say if it did not have to shout?

- What am I afraid would happen if I let the anger go?

- Is anger helping me take action, or preventing me from feeling something underneath it?

- What action would honor its message without letting it run the day?

Anger can be protective and it can be clarifying. It is often the emotion that finally allows a person to say enough after years of saying it's fine. But a bodyguard who begins attacking everyone walking past the house has become its own problem, and the household eventually organizes itself around managing him.

The goal is not to get rid of your anger. The goal is to understand what it came to protect, and then to decide, deliberately and while calm, whether its current strategy is still the one you want.

Therapy connection: If anger is costing you relationships you care about, therapy can help you keep the information and change the delivery.
